DID and how it feels like for me when others fake it

I will write more about what DID really is and generally more information about this trauma disorder later, but for now, feel free to look up Dissociative Identity Disorder for yourself...

I will never understand how someone wants to fake a disorder. Even we who are diagnosed with DID are not that unique or interesting, it’s just a glorified way of seeing something that is very scary and debilitating for many. Sure, my alters have saved me from trauma, and I wouldn’t do life without them. But it is still a trauma diagnosis. It’s like saying you want a complex trauma history. “Wanting” DID without the actual history that is the cause of it is like eating the cake and wanting it too. But even worse!

There’s a phenomenon online (and offline) where people take disorders and customize them to feel special, but they take away the seriousness and the realness of that diagnosis. Sure, it might be something (mental health-wise) there, a reason why they want to do this that isn’t right… But it’s still wrong to claim a diagnosis you haven’t been diagnosed with by a mental health professional. It’s a hill I’m willing to die on.

I know in some countries, mental health services are expensive, but please give the caveat that you think you are a DID system and that you don’t have a formal diagnosis, then. It’s valid to suspect it, you know yourself best, but don’t claim a formal diagnosis you don’t have!

To me, you can disrespect others even if you think it’s just affecting you!

“Why should I care? This is MY life”, some people argue, but since when did our lives exist within a vacuum?! Everything you do, if it’s not just in the privacy of your own home (yes, online counts as public space!), is going to affect others!

I don’t want to be a gatekeeper of Dissociative Identity Disorder, but I will continue to educate on it, and it’s still a rare diagnosis, so logically, many people will “want” it and will fake it. Just because it’s so rare and complicated.

Humans are so weird.
